Massage Contra-Indications
A contra-indication indicates that a form of treatment is not appropriate.
To lessen the risk of injuring a patient, check with a doctor before giving a massage.

Massage is intended to help people feel better. However, it is not always appropriate. Caution is indicated for the following conditions. Work under the doctor's advisal, and follow the physician's recommendations precisely for the following. Remember: The doctor is responsible for the patient's health.
* Any person or condition questionable!
* Cardiac or circulatory problems - high blood pressure, edema, etc.
* Chronic back ailments
* Fractures and/or dislocations
* Joint disorders - osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, facet dysfunction or subluxation, TMG dysfunction, etc.
* Healing wounds
* Paralyzed
* Pregnancy in last stages
* Serious infection or inflammation
* Serious injuries -- strain/muscle tears, whiplash, sprain/ligament, tendonitis...
* Skin diseases (avoid the area affected) - eczema, psoriasis, etc.
* Stomach ulcers
* Tumors
* Varicose veins
A few precautions:
Ask the client to advise of any discomfort. Empower the client to "be in control."
Avoid hacking over the kidneys, or transversely across a muscle
Avoid pressing over arteries at sides of the neck or over the throat
Do not push hard upon the lower abdomen
Suggestion: Three reasons to use a written statement on a printed form to acknowledge referred cases. The doctor knows the patient has shown up. It is a courtesy to the physician. Checks the accuracy of the physician's instructions.
