Stress KillsIt is important to distinguish between the words stress and tension. Stress comes from an external stressor - any experience that you haven't brought into loving non-resistance. The paradox is that stressors are worthy of resistance. In fact, we usually have no choice but to resist most stressors insofar as they relate to the physical. The classic Christian example is when the devil reportedly tempted Jesus, "If you're the son of God, go jump off that cliff." Jesus declined. Stress happens unavoidably as part of all physical experience. But the real power behind stressors is the energy that fuels them! How we relate to feelings associated with stressor energies determines how much tension we carry in mind and body. When we resist stressor energies, we unconsciously convert them into tension. Resisting stressor energies packs stressor energies inside us … think of the kid who packs snow into a snowball, as he packs the energy in the snow. Packed stressor energy is stored in our head and brain cells. Like migrating birds, it soon finds its way into the referential cells of our bodies as well - and causes tightness, pain, discomfort, and illness. Tension is functional. It gets our attention. We've Spiritual work to do! Our minds and bodies don't work right because the natural life force energy flowing inside us slows to a creepy crawl because of tension energy blocks - like road blocks -- that are in the window switches of our reflexes. Practicing love rather than resistance toward feelings that we have associated with our stressors is the only way to melt tension so we can release energy blocks that separate us from infinite healing power! We recently read an article, Stress Really Might Be Killing You, reporting a study of 119 men and women who took care of spouses with dementia. The control group comprised 106 people of similar ages who were not living under the stress of constant care giving. Blood tests showed that a chemical called Interleukin-6 sharply increased in the blood of stressed caregivers, compared with the control group. Previous studies have associated IL-6 with heart disease, arthritis, osteoporosis, type-2 diabetes, and certain cancers. The study also found the increase in IL-6 may linger in caregivers for as long as three years, after the spouses die. The survey found that 78 of the 119 care-giving spouses soon died. "This really makes a link to why chronic stress can actually kill people," said Janice Kiecolt-Glaser, professor of psychology & psychiatry at Ohio State Univ. "We haven't had a good mechanism before." She explained that people under stress tend to do things that increase their levels of IL-6. They may smoke or overeat, for example. Smoking raises IL-6 levels, a chemical secreted by fat cells. Stressed people may also not get enough exercise or sleep, whereas exercise and normal sleep reduce IL-6. It points to the need to control stress better, she said.
