How I Found My Path to Service
In 1981, I Sought to Ally…
With a multi-millionaire to financially support an organization that I would establish. A real nag I was, because every week for about a year, I mailed him improving proposals. Focusing on winning his support catalyzed my thinking. He never once responded directly - only indirectly through surrogates who conveyed to me that he said to stop. I asked him to tell me directly if he wanted me to stop, and since he didn't, my enthusiasm only increased. He published a magazine called Success Unlimited, later renamed Success Magazine, and wrote an inspiring column about following high principles, such as Follow Your Dreams and Keep Purpose Constant.
After Nearly a Year's Endeavors…
To seek his support, I came up with the concept for an organization that I wanted to call SSRA -- Success Strategy to Revitalize America. The SSRA concept was described in August 1981, to a small group of readers through Seminars Directory, which I published. The paid circulation was less than 1,000. I also revealed my plan and hope to ally with W. Clement Stone and mailed him a copy. Big mistake! Or was it? I overlooked the detail that he hadn't said he was interested in anything that I had mailed to him, nor had he responded to nearly 50 proposals.
Surely He Would Support Me Now!
Wrong! He sued me for $70 million, which seemed ridiculous, considering that I wasn't worth even $7,000. I'm guessing that his intention was to motivate me to seek public support for SSRA. But instead, his suit shifted my motivation from developing SSRA to relieving tensions in my own life and body! I had started studying massage in 1976. The impulse to relieve tension for myself and my family in that time of duress was so strong, I couldn't ignore it. And it soon spawned a compelling new quest, How Can I Help YOU Release Tensions in Your Life?
Everyone Has Learning Experiences…
On life's paths, many of which we are sure we would not consciously choose. For me, it is clear that a swift "kick in the rear" from a multi-millionaire started me on my path to develop OM-FREE = HOME-FREE. If you benefit from an OM-FREE session(s), you can thank the late W. Clement Stone, at least in part. I would have never have done to anyone what he did to me, but he obviously acted to support me through the motivating power of adversity. After reading my proposals, he must have known that sooner or later, I would convert the collateral of an apparent adversity into a greater success. I was not on my path with SSRA, and it has taken 30 years, but I have finally converted the collateral of the adversities -- including the loss of my computer, the garnishment of $7,000 of monies I owed others and had to struggle to repay, a paper folder, and other office equipment, and the years it took to get back on my feet and develop OM-FREE = HOME-FREE. Hopefully, you will benefit from my adversities!
The Shift Meant…
That instead of pursuing my dream to serve a million people at once, I would serve just one person, or maybe relatively few, at a time. Maybe YOU! It now seems obvious that to serve one person well can be more valuable, at least to the person being served, than to serve a million people superficially.
